Hey Y'all -

Does anyone on here know about Basenji breed mixes? I have a 12 month old Basenji-Chow mix and would like some insight or info into the combination of the two breeds together.

Thanks!

my baby is dead

this is still fresh , but I had to put my baby down this morning. He developed a tumor in his brain that left him anxious confused and for the past few weeks in pain. Pain killers only accelerated his downward spiral.

When he woke up this morning with me, he urinated on the floor. Something he has never ever done before and he was blind, anxious and nervous. It crushed me to see him this way. Screaming in fear. It took me hours to calm him down. I couldn't make him endure this anymore for my own selfish reasons.

I'm so sad, when I came home tonight I stood by the door waiting for him to come greet me out of habit. I miss him sooo much.

Hey everyone. You all seem to know a lot about this breed. I have a mix and the vet is unsure of what she is. . .they think she is pit bull or staff mix with something else I believe this very much so but looking around on the internet i have found several basenji mixes that look just like her. Was wondering if I post a picture if you can tell me if she has basenji in her or not. Thanks.

chew toys

anyone have any recommendations for chew toys for Basenji's I've tried allot of the typical crap at the pet store but my boy just inst interested in it.

Its becoming a dire situation because he is developing a habit for chewing up potential toxic things (platics, rubbers, rubber coated wires and elastics) in the house, and besides that being a nuisance, I'm more concerned about his health than anything. he is working his way to being crated again while i leave the house since it's too cold to leave him outside while I'm at work.

We had worked our way through this separation anxiety thing before but he seems to be reverting back. I'm looking for a dog psychologist in my area to see if we can figure out some corrective action to take.

The final solution will be to add control zones in the house that will make some of the areas where he is finding things to destroy off limits. I'd hate to do that, but ultimately his health is my responsibility and I have read the horror stories about ppl who dont control the things that their B's eat and wind up having surgery to remove things.

FAVOURITE THING YOUR BASENJI LIKES TO DO

Hello all
just curious... what is the most favourite thing that your Basenji likes to do? I have had Basenji mixes and my first one just loved to kiss people, she was insane with it and when I told her not to kiss the guests that came to the house she would crawl (so I didnt see her) to get to the people. was sooo funny she was nicknamed 'frenchy' by one of my friends husbands.
my current mix loves to sleep in her wee bed in front of the fire if she could jump in I think she would, she loves to be warm and lets out huge sighs of relaxation when she is all comfortable. Its funny to hear her make such a big noise for a wee dog. She also can not get close enough when I go to bed, the colder it is the closer she snuggles :-)
such a joy to have around.
so what do your Basenji's just love to do ?

I have two basenjis. A sweet rescue tri girl named Rose and our original raised-from-a-puppy red and white boy, Otto. Otto has a wonderful, if somewhat overactive, personality and he's nearly always affable. However, there is one problem we've been having and that is when he's disturbed while sleeping, he is extremely grumpy, snarls, and once even bit me. We've been working with him for a while now on this, waking him up by petting him; praising when he's calm and raising voices when he snarls. If he keeps snarling, he gets put on his back and held down until he relaxes, then it's more pets and praise. The problem is, I don't feel things are getting better. It's very annoying to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and have to face a snarling dog who's captured my vacated warm spot when I return! He has his own dog bed and our policy is that when he's there, we won't disturb him, but when he's in OUR bed, we get preference. Do you have any suggestions?

Help, My Basenji has Turned ON ME!!

I am completely mortified by the terrible loss of friendship and trust with my basenji girl... Here's the story:

About 7 months ago my boyfriend and I found a stray basenji and after many attempts to return her to her home we discovered she was no longer wanted, where ever her home was. So we have kept her, loved and fed her, bathed and walked her ever since. We think she was treated badly because to any loud or sudden action she runs and hides asap, and when she needs to be punished she rolls over on her back and puts her paws up.

Yesterday I slept in until 11 for the first time in a long time, and Chance, my basenji, peed on the carpet. No big deal, I had her smell it and gave her two little pops on the rear end, not hard at all, and let her go outside for a bit. Ever since she will not come within 10 ft of me, look at me, and when I try and kiss her on her head like I;ve done a thousand times a day since we had her, she tries to bite/nip angrily at me. :( after being her main master for so long do you think she was mad because my boyfriend wasn't the one punishing her and usually she has me to come to? It's been a day and a half and she still doesn't want anything to do with me, unless I have her leash in hand. She's tried to bite me three times since. Any ideas? Suggestions? HELP!!! I am so upset that my dog doesn't love me anymore.
Erin

The Dog Whisperer

Alright I've been checking out this show on the National Geographic Channel called "The Dog Whisperer". I'm not new to obidience and dog training especially when it comes to my Basenji. I did extensive research before me and Pharoah met and for the most part we have worked out a compromise. I'm the master and he's the Basenji, I have patience for his initial decline on a command (a Basenji trait) and he doesnt push my buttons. He's smart so he'll only play the stubborn B part when he knows I'm in a good mood, but once he senses I'm very serious he complies.

For the most part what gets him in trouble the most is the nose on his face. I know he wants to be good, but sometimes the sweet allure of food drives all common sense and training right out of his immediate thought process. The rest of it is being a sight and sound hound their are just some things that cant be trained out of him.

Anyways I digressed. I wanted to mention that I've tried a coupla things differently than I had been trying before and I've been amazed at how Pharoah has responded. Having a better understanding of dog psycology has definetly helped me in my training of Pharoah and maintaining harmony in the household. Because hell have no wrath like a p-o'ed Basenji and then subsequently p-o'ed dad.

I'm not going to pretend that life is peaches and cream 100% of the time. Having a Basenji is challenging at times, especially because they are so dang smart. Besides maintaining the fence perimeter, things for the most part are good with us. Pharoah is very food motivated, almost too much so the way he gets excited during training. But I have him up to about 10 verbal commands that he responds too (sooner or later) and I'm very happy for that.

Anyways check the show out if you can, if not definetly check the book out. It's good reading. BTW I havent seen him tackle a Basenji with a problem on the show yet. I'm not sure if it because the Basenji is not so popular a breed or because they can be so challenging for people that are used to more docile breeds so they are given up for adoption. But I would be curious to see if certain behaviours can indeed be trained out of the dog.

Well its getting cold consistently again.

Today is the first day we have actually gotten snow all day. Granted its a little snow over a long period of time, but its still relativly cold.

Pharoah is a noted heat lover, and can usually be found parked in front of one of the heat registers during winter. The winter routine is that I let him out in the morning and someone in the house lets him out when he asks to go out during the day and evenings.

During warmer weather he usually spends the day outside, he insist on being outside during daylight. When I'm available we go on tug of war missions through the neighborhood.

This has been less often since he has developed a cough. Now he goes outside just long enough to do his business. Even his curiousity or desire to stay outside is usually overidden by his desire to be warm.

Knowing how much he loves the outdoors, and I would like to be able to take him on a walk during winter has anyone found any clothing fleece or sweater type that will allow him to stay warm and comfortable longer. Having to warm up my popsicle like and shivering dog everytime he stays out for too long is getting old.

I'm looking for something that is tight fitting and good enough to cover a good portion of his body. Something that is basenji resistant. In the past he has bucked around like a wild bull when I put clothing on him, and I'm not really one those ppl who dresses their dog in outfits, but I do want him to stay warm.
Any reccomendations?

Basenji Help Needed because of Katrina

Hi. I belong to the national Basenji Rescue Organization (BRAT). Here is a post I received from them yesterday:

BRAT West Regional Coordinator, Liz Newton, spoke this evening with long-time basenji rescue person, Janine Peters, of Dry Prong, LA. Many of you know Janine from her work as the past BCOA rescue co-chair.

Janine reports that she has been working with her All Breed rescue group about 20 hours/day since Monday to rescue and ship dogs to safe areas.

People are bringing dogs to her group in great numbers to be rehomed and her group is limited in that they cannot accept more than they have crates in which to ship them to other locations.

She said a man with a boat just dropped off 10 he had rescued from the water and roof tops. Owners, who are permanently displaced, are bringing their pets in and saying good-bye. Janine just sent a truck load of dogs to CA as they were talking.

Janine’s group needs resources: money, crates, and food primarily. BRAT will be sending money and crates to Janine and welcomes the assistance of all basenji people in this project.

How can you donate? The fastest way is to use your credit card through our website at:

BRAT will use 100% of all funds donated for this project (or other Katrina-related animal rescue projects should Janine’s group not need all of the money we raise.)

In the Designation box, be sure to note “Katrina” so that we know where you want us to use the money.

Hey, I don't want to find a new home for my two wonderful boys, but I might be needing to adjust my living situation drastically in the near future.

anyone know of a reputable breeder who might consider being a temporary home for two boys? Both 4 1/2, one intact, ex show from Dragnquest, and the other a gangly snuggly boo rescue from a puppy mill.

Both currently live with 2 other dogs (terriers), reasonably well socialized. I can't leave them, but I'm unsure of my next step in extricating myself from this 'situation'. A temporary setup might be nice and preferential over kennelling for a few days.

Hey do this! *PLEASE*

I dont know if you've heard, but occassionally from time to time I'm gonna step on my soap box and preach and this is one of those times.

But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE hear me out. Please test your Basenji once monthly for sugar in her/his urine. It's really cheap, only takes a moment and can save your buddies life! Basenjis are prone to these UTI infections from about 3 years of age and older.

I've included a couple short blurbs from a couple of links that where sent to me, please take a moment and read them. This doesnt have to be a fatal disease and it's really easily treatable.

----
http://basenjicompanions.org/health/fanconi/syndrome.html
Description of Fanconi Syndrome and its Control

In this condition, the renal tubules of the kidney begin to fail to do their proper job of resorbing nutrients into the dog's system. Without testing and subsequent oral supplementation, the dog's internal organs begin to falter, the dog looses condition, and will ultimately die. With current supplementation techniques, a Fanconi-afflicted dog can often be expected to live a reasonably normal, healthy life-span.
A dog with Fanconi Syndrome may, however, acquire any other health problems that dogs may get, as well as potentially being at higher risk for some disorders such as GME, a multi-site brain cancer. Not all Fanconi dogs do develop other problems, though, and the link to other disorders such as GME is still unknown.

To use a far-oversimplified analogy, Fanconi is as if the renal tubules of the kidneys had become "leaky sieves," and the dog loses buffers, protein, glucose, amino acids, water-soluble vitamins and other things necessary for good health into the urine instead of passing them into the body for proper utilization. Left untreated, the dog's acid/base blood balance will go off and begin to compromise internal organs, the dog will lose condition and musculature, and the dog will slowly die.

The "control" is to feed the missing nutrients back to into the dog in the form of inexpensive supplements according to instructions in the Fanconi Protocol for Veterinarians.

The supplements used include: buffers (sodium bicarbonate tablets), protein (high-protein diet), glucose (more frequent feedings), amino acids (Amino Fuel), vitamins and minerals (Pet-Tabs and Centrum vitamins), calcium/phosphorus (dicalcium phosphate powder or Pet-Cal), potassium (Tumul-K, Uricit-C or potassium Gluconate). Some of these supplements will stay in the body and keep the dog stable and healthy during its nearly full lifetime...
-----

http://basenjirescue.org/brat_member_info/health.htm

3. Some Basenjis inherit a kidney disorder called Fanconi Syndrome in which the renal tubules do not process nutrients properly. Every basenji over age three should have its urine checked monthly for the presence of glucose, since sugar in the urine is the earliest indicator that Fanconi may be present. Bayer makes a product called Diastix that can be used for this
test. Diastix strips are available from online sources such as webrx.com or at some pharmacies. (Discount stores that have pharmacies, such as Wal-Mart and Target, and supermarket pharmacies are two places you can find them.)

If you discover glucose in the basenji's urine, your veterinarian can order additional urine and blood tests to diagnose Fanconi.

Food Storage

I'm looking for a neat way to store my dogs food. I was saw in a catalog a # of years back a neat thing that looked like it was made by rubbermaid. A container that you mount on the wall to hold the food up off the floor and it had a hopper on the bottom that you could dump into the food bowl pretty easily by pulling a handle on the side.

Of course I havent seen that thing since those few years ago, back before I had Pharoah in my life. I need to figure something out. Its substantially cheaper for me to buy the 50lb bag of food, but I'm having a problem with insects being attracted to it before its completly gone.

In any case I'm gonna purchase something as a temporary solution for now, but I'm curious to hear if there is anything better out there specifically intended for food dispensing (well other than those sharper image devices, neat but my dog eats out of raised stainless steel bowls already).

Well there are only two times of year when my realitivly well hair retaining basenji, turns into your atypical cat. Spring and Fall.

Well it's officially started again I let pharoah climb into my lap (as if I had a choice) and started giving him a vigourous but still gentle scratch about the neck area as he prefers it.

*makes noise trying to shake dog hair from tongue, mouth and lips area* I soon realized that static cling and loose dog hair do make me a walking fuzz ball. Considering that 95% of my warddrobe is solid black, it looks like my poor animal is going to headed towards twice weekly baths and daily brushing sessions.

I dont know why but he really doesnt like to be brushed at all and I'm content not to except during two about 2.5 months of the year.

I need to make an appointment for him w/the vet. He's coughing for the past month or so. Nothing serious or even regular, but he doesnt normally cough at all. Maybe the doggie hair is getting him all goofed up too. Does kinda sound like hair balls.

Ya know, I can't seem to find anyone involved with basenjis or even sight hounds here in San Diego.

Okay, I haven't really done much more than online searching. It'd be nice to find a group that does some lure coursing to see if one of my boys might have an affinity.

Anyone know about any San Diego whereabouts of:
- A basenji club
- A basenji breeder
- A sight hound club
- Anything anywhere having to do with anything sight hound and/or lure coursing-ish?

curbing the escape instinct

My little basenji has recently developed a dangerous habit of escaping from my yard. I have a 3 foot high chain link fence, I have tried several methods to prevent him from escaping and until recently those efforts where working, but he has figured out how to climb chain link.....smart little brat.

Anyways I'm thinking of enforcing the fence parameter by adding a "invisible fence" to the areas where he is most successfull at escaping from.

I had purchased a remote shock collar for training him and correcting some indoor behavior that he knows that he is not suppossed to be doing. The collar was relativly effective in the two highest settings, however he did become resistant to it when he was outside of the fence perimeter running around like a maniac. The problem being he is not street smart and will run in front of cars while I am trying to retrieve him.
Luckily most of the ppl to date have slowed down or stopped so they didnt hit him. *fingers crossed*

So I'm looking for reccomendations for an "invisible fence" coupled with the remote control for training. I'm looking for input from ppl who have either type of systemn and the brand name of the units. I had purchased a unit from PetSmart, but I am unimpressed with the fact that the level of correction is NOT adjustable. So I dont think it will work. This is based on my experience with a collar of the same brand that had 10 adjustable levels with my dog ONLY responding to the two highest levels of correction.

I only have another week before I can return it without a restocking fee sooo I need your valuable input before its too late.

RV's and escape artists

Cross post from Dogzone & DogTribe:
Hey, I just joined the wonderful world of RV's. The point was so that I could road trip WITH the little terrors.

Best laid plans: I'm researching ways to handle escape artist basenjis. If the door is open 3", they can sneak out...really. And not closing the door is easily done when you're tired.

My first thought was a dog pen around the area under the awning. I'm considering a screen room attached to the awning, and getting X-Pen or similar pen walls for added reinforcement. There is always the issue of the area under the RV itself. I won't be leaving the dogs in there, but to give them a place to play and be with us...and if they get out the door they aren't 'gone'.

Anyone have any experiences with escape artist canines and RV living? Any pics of a kool setup? Any ideas of enclosures that are quick & easy to set up and *effective*?

kids walking basenjis, your opinion

Something I picked up off the BRAT mailing list.

In a message dated 8/5/04 10:50:07 AM Pacific Daylight Time,
gmowry@tampabay.rr.com writes:

IMO children should NEVER walk a basenji by themselves, PERIOD. It is not safe. There are too many things that can happen, from the dog escaping to attacking another dog, to biting someone the child lets pet or approach it.

From experienced coordinators myself included I know of all these and more incidents happening with adopted dogs with their adult humans walking them. With a child it is just that much more likely to occur.

Further many b's will feel vulnarable with a child in control and feel they have to protect/defend themselves. What the person walking the dog is feeling travels down the leash to the dog, influencing it behavior.Even experinced show people will eat a mint or chew gum beofre goign into the show ring, why, so the dog does not smell the nervousness on their breath.

Dogs are far more sensitive to these types things than some realize. A child has too much on their mind and most are not anywhere near mature enough to walk a basenji until into their teens, if then. With other breeds it may be different, but with basenji, IMO CHILDREN SHOULD NOT WALK THEM.

Dana Cole
gmowry@tampabay.rr.com

ps. just thought I would add, as with most things in life there are exceptions to every rule. But I stii hold strong my opinion that most children should not walk most basenjis, especially a rescue. Something unexpected could trigger a fright response in them from their past and one would have no way to anticipate. Best to have an adult in control.

DogScape, the medical and social diary for dogs, is currently in beta test. We’re looking for web-skilled dog owners to sign up (it’s free), create profiles for their dogs, and make diary entries.

http://www.dogscape.com

DogScape lets you create a web page for your dogs with pictures and descriptions of your dogs.

You can make social diary entries, including pictures, so you can share your dog’s fun, exploits, frisking, and other social activities with friends, family, or the whole world. Track your puppy’s growth. Remember your dog’s favorite friends.

You can make medical diary entries. You can keep these entries private or share them with friends. Keep track of vet visits, medication administration (“when was the last time I gave my pooch flea meds?”), and other medical events.

Please help us beta test DogScape and make it the best place to share your dog’s life with others while keeping track of his health.

Heartworm Medicine Linked To Sickness, Death

Heartworm Medicine Linked To Sickness, Death

FDA Receives More Than 5,000 Adverse Reaction Reports

POSTED: 3:21 pm CDT May 25, 2004

A new heartworm medication called ProHeart 6 has been linked to a number of
dog deaths, an NBC 5 investigation finds. Since it was approved in May 2001,
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received more than 5,000 reports of adverse reactions -- 491 of them deaths.

Now, the FDA is investigating.

Debra McMullen has other dogs now, but says none can take the place of Sassy, the Chihuahua who moved across the country with her. "She was my baby. I don't have children, so she was my baby," McMullen said.

After using monthly heartworm prevention tablets she sometimes forgot,
McMullen asked her veterinarian about the six-month injection called ProHeart 6.

She wondered if her 11-year-old dog was too old.

"And he said, 'No, that shouldn't matter. She's fine.' And he gave her the
shot and the very next day she started having breathing problems," McMullen
said. Two weeks later, Sassy was dead.

Chief was dead just days after his only ProHeart 6 injection, according to
his owner. Eric Williams raised the 9-year-old Rottweiler from a pup.

"For a completely healthy dog, in the space of three or four days, to go
through what I saw Chief go through is not right," Williams said.

FDA figures show the number of ProHeart 6 adverse reaction reports of deaths
to be much higher than monthly heartworm medications -- an average of 138 a
year compared with as few as 6 for Heartgard and Sentinel.

Chief had tested positive for heartworms before receiving ProHeart 6 in May
2002.

Manufacturer Fort Dodge Animal Health has since strengthened label warnings
against using the preventive on dogs already carrying the parasite.

During the past two years, the FDA has ordered three label changes and two
"Dear Doctor" warning letters about possible adverse reactions.

Experts say the concern is that the medication is a highly concentrated,
microencapsulated drug that must be mixed in suspension for time release inside the animal's body.

"[It] needs to be administered properly. It needs to be prepared properly,"
said Dr. Bert Childers, a veterinarian with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Childers has used ProHeart 6 in the past without trouble, and still considers it safe. But his SPCA clinic does not dispense it, in favor of monthly treatment.

"You can stop, and you don't have another 4 months left in the body that you
have to contend with," he said.

The company says dogs would be in greater danger missing heartworm treatment.

According to Fort Dodge, adverse reaction reports are less than one percent
of more than 14 million doses given, and that most death reports are not
actually proven to be from ProHeart 6.

In fact, Sassy and Chief were cremated. Their owners can prove nothing with
only their ashes. And both their veterinarians told them ProHeart 6 was not the cause.

However, independent veterinarians told NBC 5 that the symptoms suggest
otherwise.

"This is probably an adverse reaction from that," Childers said.

"Stop the sale until they find out what's going on," Williams said.

Meanwhile, the FDA says it is "actively" investigating.

The FDA also recommends that pet owners should talk to their vet and read
current warnings carefully before deciding which treatment to use.

Fanconi Syndrome & Your baby

Stolen from: http://basenjirescue.org/brat_member_info/sugar.htm

It is useful to glucose strip-test any Basenji over the age of three for Fanconi Syndrome, a defect of the renal tubules of the kidneys which tends to be rampant in Basenjis. Fanconi Syndrome usually comes on between the ages of 4 and 8, but dogs have been diagnosed as young as 3 and as old as 11.

With Fanconi Syndrome, much of the glucose (sugar), proteins, vitamins and minerals, and the buffers in the blood which keep the acid/base balance stable are lost in the urine rather than being properly utilized. The blood glucose, however, will measure normal to low. Because glucose is being lost in the urine with this syndrome, the glucose strip-testing method is a good, early warning tool for detecting possible oncoming Fanconi Syndrome.

Untreated, a Fanconi-afflicted dog will die, but the dog stands a good chance of living a normal, relatively healthy life-span with early detection and treatment by the Fanconi Protocol for Veterinarians developed by Dr. Steve Gonto of Savannah, Georgia. Symptoms of untreated Fanconi Syndrome are loss of weight and condition and both copious drinking and urination.
TEST METHOD

Wet an inexpensive diabetic test strip or tape in the Basenji's urine stream and waiting the amount of time called for on the container (usually 30 seconds.) These strips can be found in the diabetic section of your local drug store for less than $20. If the test strip doesn't change color in the allotted amount of time, don't worry at this time. If it does change color, have a vet do a repeat urine glucose reading and a test the blood glucose. If the Basenji is spilling sugar in the urine and the blood test is normal to low, you probably have a problem with Fanconi Syndrome.

Fanconi Syndrome can be controlled but not cured. Untreated, the dog will die, but early detection may allow the dog to live a long and happy life with treatment. Dogs with good appetites will be the easiest to "pill" with the needed, but inexpensive, supplements.

If you find that the Basenji has Fanconi Syndrome, you might want to read the articles about Fanconi Syndrome in the Basenji Companions' web site under "Health," including an article on numerous food items in which to hide pills. The URL is http://www.basenjicompanions.org/health/fanconi/index.html.

Dr. Gonto's veterinary protocol for Fanconi can be found on the same site in the "Other Sites" section. Select "Interesting Sites." Under the heading, "Health Related Information," click on"Fanconi Protocol." You can also have your veterinarian contact member Dr. Steve Gonto at (912) 598-5067 or e-mail Outdoc@aol.com for a veterinary protocol treatment card and advice regarding treating Fanconi Syndrome.

Proheart 6 INFO Important!!!

This information as sent to me by BRAT. Read Carefully!!!

I know that vets are pushing the Proheart 6 shot very heavily.
However, BRAT strongly recommends against it and has prohibited its use on BRAT dogs.
Here is some recent information on this shot:

http://cbs4boston.com/reports/local_story_061205218.html
<http://cbs4boston.com/reports/local_story_061205218.html>

Could your pet be in danger? I-team reporter Joe Bergantino
investigates.

Joanne Plumer treats all of her dogs like members of the family. So she immediately noticed something was wrong with her 13-year-old dog named April.

Joanne Plumer: "She couldn't stand up any more, she couldn't eat, her mouth was full of blisters, her fur was falling out."

It all started the day after April got a shot of this heartworm
medication called Proheart 6. Three weeks later, April had to be put to sleep.

Joanne Plumer: "We were devastated with April. We were totally
devastated with April. She was my baby."

Within a few weeks, Joanne's other dog, 10-year-old Cuji, also treated with Proheart 6 got very sick. Cuji died three months after getting her shot.

Joanne Plumer: "She went completely blind. Then you know, she started coughing and coughing and she couldn't catch her breath and we checked her out and she had complete kidney failure."

These are not isolated cases.

Our I-Team investigation has found that in the past two and a half years the FDA has received more than four thousand reports of dogs getting sick after getting a shot of Proheart six. And more than four hundred dogs have died nationwide. The FDA says it's been able to link Proheart six to a small percentage of those cases. But even those numbers are, in the FDA's words,
"a cause for concern", and the agency is investigating.

In fact, the FDA has twice told the makers of Proheart 6 to change its labeling. Most recently, asking the company to add that there have been rare reports of death.

Dr. Bob Rogers: "I think this is just the tip of the iceberg."

Veterinarian Bob Rogers wonders why the FDA c has not taken the drug off the market.

The FDA's answer: it believes the medication could potentially save the lives of more dogs than it harms.

But Dr. Rogers disagrees.

Dr. Bob Rogers: "I have seen veterinary drugs pulled off the market when there were less deaths involved than this."

As for the manufacturer of Proheart 6, a company called fort dodge animal health, it declined an on-camera interview but released this statement saying: Millions of U.S. dogs have benefited from the heartworm protection provided by Proheart 6.

The reports submitted to the FDA represent a fraction of 1% of the total doses sold. And the product has been proven to be safe. Donna Sadoski doesn't believe that. Her eleven-year-old dog Sammy went blind after getting a shot of Proheart 6.

Donna Sadoski: "I wonder how many animals will be put to sleep? How many animals will have life threatening problems they will have to deal with for the rest of their lives before someone stops this medicine from actually being given to them."

The makers of Proheart 6 say they do not believe their heartworm
medication caused Donna's and Joanne's dogs to get sick.

But the FDA continues to investigate, at this point asking the company to find out if there are any impurities in the drug's formula that may be causing problems.

If your dog becomes ill after being treated with Proheart 6, you should report it to the FDA's center for veterinary medicine. The number to call is 1-888-fda-vets. Or visit thier website at www.fda.gov
<http://www.fda.gov/cvm/index/ade/adetoc.htm>

basenji mixes

I was wondering if anyone knew what basenji traits tend to remain when one is mixed.

I have this nagging suspicion my dog is part basenji, but don't really know. People who have basenjis think she's a basenji, and people who have rat terriers think she's a ratter.

She's basenji-sized and shaped, but her coloring isn't basenji-like. She does bark, but she also makes bizarre un-doglike noises that sound like the Tazmanian Devil. And she has that corkscrew tail, although it doesn't twist as fully as basenji's tails do unless she's really excited or really telling off some squirrel. But the most obvious thing is that she makes those "arrroooo" noises - mingled with barks.

Any idea if basenji genes mix like this? I've only ever met purebreed basejis.
